Collaborating with "Walk a Mile in my Shoes on the Path to Peace" - 11/7/15, 11/12/16
On October 15, 2015, during Taking Actions Day 2015, DonnaChristine Park from "Walk a MILE in MY SHOES~~~ on the Path to Peace!!!" invited us to their 3rd annual WAMMS Community SHOEDrive at the Old Town Alexandria Farmers Market in Virginia. They collect shoes to share them locally with folks who do not have shoes at all. Within 2 weeks, I contacted some of my colleagues, and we were able to collect about 60 pairs of shoes. On November 7, 2015, I had the pleasure to meet DonnaChristine and participate in such great cause. The next year, they returned for their 4th annual one-day event, and again I was able to collect more than 30 pairs of shoes and brought them to her on November 12, 2016. I am glad we could help and transport the shoes to her hotel both times. Thank you for all you do! "THANK YOU, dear AJ for Your lovely visit...in the rain. It has been such a privilege to meet You & to accept Your sharing of 'gently-loved' SHOES. WAMMS has been so very BLESSED by this incredible COLLABORATION. Hope to see You again, soon." - DonnaChristine Park (11/10/15)

Philippines Relief Fundraising Campaign 11/18/13 - 11/21/13
On November 7, 2013, the eye of typhoon Haiyan made its first landfall in the Philippines at Guiuan, Eastern Samar, with winds to 315 km/h (195 mph). The storm made five additional landfalls in the country before emerging over the South China Sea and dissipating on November 11, 2013. The cyclone caused catastrophic destruction in the central Philippines, particularly on Samar Island and Leyte. According to the UN, about 11 million people were affected. A report in November 2013 confirmed 3,976 deaths, 18,175 injured, and 1,590 people missing. Following the success of our Japan and Pacific Relief Fundraising Campaign in 2011, I designed a picture (left) to help those affected by the typhoon. I donated $5 to the American Red Cross for each person who used the picture as their Facebook profile or re-tweeted our posts. The campaign was effective for 4 days, and 26 people participated, for a total of $130. On November 22, 2013, I posted the receipt of our donation to the American Red Cross (left). |
Being Part of the "Hope Army" - 10/20/13
I found out about Darick Reed (Me Against Fear) from Nicole Yori who I met during my "Across the USA" trip while doing the "Love Action" in Las Vegas, NV. Darick and I became friends through our shared passion to make the world a better place. He walked over 1200 miles, from Missoula, MT to Santa Barbara, CA, to raise awareness and funds for Suicide Prevention, and to spread his message of Hope.
On October 20, 2013, when he was less than 250 miles away from reaching his goal, he decided to raffle his “Hope Banner” for those who made donations to help him complete his trip. Darick used our Taking Actions' sticker on his wagon and passed around our wristbands to share our mission. Although I had donated before and during his walk, I decided to match donations made by Taking Actions' fans on that day. I matched the donations of 9 of our supporters, for a total of $170. It was a pleasure to be able to help and support Darick in such a great project; he is an awesome guy with a huge heart. On October 31, 2013, Darick reached Santa Barbara after walking in 4 states; he is definitely an example of someone taking actions to make a change in the world.
Part of this campaign focuses on supporting those who are doing something, and Darick is definitely one of those soldiers. I believe that we are here to help and support each other. We are a big family. One love!

Kindness on "Materialistic Friday" - 11/23/12
Thinking of all those employees who were working on "Black Friday" after Thanksgiving's Day, I decided to show some appreciation and kindness in my community. I went to my local mall on "Materialistic Friday", and instead of buying unnecessary things just because they were on sale, I decided to give away raffle tickets to retail employees who had to work on the holiday. I spent about 5 hours passing tickets around. Employees were too busy helping customers all day, but it was a good turnout overall. The 3 winners received gift cards and some promotional items. We should not forget the meaning of holidays. Consumerism becomes more important to some people, instead of spending time with family, showing affection with our actions and words, and being grateful. |

Japan and Pacific Relief Fundraising Campaign 3/27/11 - 4/3/11
On March 11, 2011, a magnitude 8.9 undersea earthquake hit the coast of Japan, approximately 43 miles east of the Oshika Peninsula of Tōhoku. The earthquake triggered powerful tsunami waves (133 feet height). The earthquake moved Honshu (the main island of Japan) 8 feet east and shifted the Earth on its axis by estimates of between 4-10 inches. A report in September 2012 confirmed 15,883 deaths, 6,145 injured, and 2,656 people missing. In an effort to help those affected by the earthquake and tsunami throughout the Pacific, I started a fundraising campaign. I designed a picture (right), and decided to donate $5 to the American Red Cross for each person who used the picture as their Facebook profile or re-tweeted our posts. The campaign was effective for 7 days, and 11 people participated, for a total of $55. On April 4, 2011, I posted the receipt of our donation to the American Red Cross (right). Natural disasters can be unpredictable; it could happen any where, any time. We must remember that we are like a big family, and we need to help each other. |
